Vanessa,
Consider that the network of government entangles real people's lives at the level of cities. Education, health, security, picking up the garbage and keep the traffic moving.

The notion that "it's the economy, Stupid" is a meme carried by Baby Boomers based on their experience growing up in a historical moment when it seemed that the Amercian nation state was the source of good and plenty. It's a typical kind of "if things go well, I'm a genius. If things suck its somebody else's fault. " Very natural, but wrong, human reaction to risk and benefits.

In fact the real power of government to create jobs or economic wealth is minimal. The job of the Federal government is to make and ENFORCE reasonable rules. The recent implosion of the American government is the direct result of 8 years of nobody paying attention combined with the stresses of long term global economic development.
